Reconstructing the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Early–Middle Jurassic Tlaxiaco Basin in southern Mexico: New insights into the crustal attenuation history of southern North America during Pangea breakup

Abstract During Pangea breakup, several Jurassic extensional to transtensional basins were developed all around the world. The boundaries of these are major structures that accommodated continental extension during time. Therefore, reconstructing geometry is a key factor in identifying faults produced attenuation breakup. We reconstruct tectono-sedimentary evolution Tlaxiaco Basin southern Mexico using sedimentologic, petrographic, and U-Pb geochronologic data. show northern boundary was an area high relief composed Paleozoic Acatlán Complex, which drained south by set alluvial fans. WNW-trending Salado River–Axutla fault exposed directly north northernmost fan exposures, it interpreted as structure controlled at its boundary. eastern represented topographic Proterozoic Oaxacan exhumed along NNW-trending Caltepec west meandering river called River. Data presented this work suggest breakup not only associated with development Tamaulipas–Chiapas transform opening Gulf Mexico, but also structures. Our offers new perspective for future studies aim western equatorial Pangea.
